Matson Logistics Provides for the Elderly

On October 15, Matson Logistics in Savannah participated in the Brown Bag for the Elderly program, which provides grocery assistance to eligible seniors.

Senior citizens are particularly vulnerable to hunger, especially at the end of the month when their funds are depleted. Often, they must make the difficult decision of whether to purchase food, fill their medical prescriptions, or pay the rent or utility bills.

Each month, volunteers assist local food bank staff in carefully packing 1,800 grocery bags with nutritious foods to supplement the diets of seniors in need.

“Over the years at Matson, we have learned the importance of giving back to the community,” said Sheila Stevenson, manager, warehouse customer service. “For many years, our team has participated in the ‘Brown Bag for the Elderly,’ but unfortunately, COVID restrictions have made that impossible these last two years. This community service event is close to our hearts here in Pooler. It’s wonderful to participate once again and help seniors in need. We want to give back to those in our society that contributed to our nation and raised us.”
