Excellence In Crisis Response Is No Accident

Matson Alaska’s Incident Management Teams from Anchorage, Kodiak, and Unalaska convened in October for their required Oil Spill Prevention and Response (OSPR) training which included two days of crisis communications and Incident Command System (ICS) refreshers and a one-day tabletop exercise with regional response partners.

The three-day agenda was facilitated by longtime Matson consultant SAC Strategy & Communications, with support from Preparedness Services and Training, and Gallagher Marine Systems. Regional contractors Alaska Chadux Network, MSI Communications, and Port of Alaska personnel also participated in the exercise.

Among other things, the training reaffirmed key objectives of crisis response:

  • Establishing an initial incident management team for each terminal.
  • Defining criteria for standing up emergency response.
  • Clarifying first actions and critical communications.
  • Providing basic information on emergency management roles and accountabilities for initial response.
