Position Summary:

The Vice President Tax works closely with the CFO, VP Controller, Treasurer, Finance Department, Legal Department, business units, and others to provide strategic tax leadership and execution of tax strategies while overseeing all tax functions including compliance and reporting, examinations and controversy, and internal tax advisory services. The Vice President Tax also acts as the primary liaison with external auditors along with consultants for resolving issues relating to M&A, planning, and tax controversies.

It is essential the candidate has a well-rounded background in corporate taxes meaning heavy U.S federal, state and local direct tax experience, at least light international direct tax experience, and significant exposure to sales and use taxes, property tax, general excise taxes, and other indirect taxes. It is also essential the candidate has significant, hands-on experience with accounting for income taxes, financial statement tax disclosures, and SOX 404 controls. The candidate must be able to manage all tax aspects of M&A due diligence, structuring, and integration.

Importantly, the ideal candidate must have strong communications and leadership skills and the ability to hire, develop, and lead staff (presently 1 Sr. Tax Manager, 3 Tax Accountants, 1 Tax Associate, and several tax contractors). The Vice President Tax reports to the Chief Financial Officer.

Specific accountabilities:

  • Perform ongoing tax planning to minimize the company’s ETR and cash taxes.

  • Provide tax advice to internal customers.

  • Oversee and approve preparation of federal, state and local tax returns, estimates, and extensions.

  • Oversee and approve tax provisions, FIN 48 computations, and financial statement tax disclosures.

  • Oversee tax research conducted for tax returns, provisions, prospective transactions, and advice provided to internal customers.

  • Oversee tax audits and conduct negotiations and settlement discussions.

  • Provide leadership, training, and motivate tax staff.

 
Essential skills and experience:

  • Undergraduate degree in Accounting, Economics or Finance. Masters in Taxation or JD/LLM highly desirable. 

  • A CPA certificate is desirable.

  • 15+ years corporate tax experience in large public accounting firm(s), law firm(s),  corporation(s), or a combination thereof is required.

  • Experience in both domestic and international corporate taxes for multi-jurisdictional companies.

  • Broad knowledge of tax laws and procedures in both domestic and international settings is required. 

  • Experience with public companies and transportation companies is desirable. 

  • The candidate must have strong managerial skills including at least 5 years managing teams of professionals.
