Matson introduces the container barges Mauna Loa and Haleakala into its Neighbor Island service in 1984. The barges have a container capacity of 216 containers and have movable cell guides. The barge Islander joins Matson's Mid-Pacific service in 1988. Equipped with two cranes, it has a capacity of 312 containers, including 70 reefers. The Waialeale, a special ro-ro barge, to carry containers, trailers, autos and heavy equipment is added to the Neighbor Island fleet in 1991.
