By 1963, with the container program moving forward, and Matson's productivity improving, the company began a multi-million dollar fleet improvement program. Four years later, Matson announced its three phase refit and shipbuilding program to cost more than $100 million. The Hawaiian Enterprise and Hawaiian Progress enter Matson's fleet in 1970. In 1973, Matson begins a 25-year charter of two 700 foot roll-on, roll-off ships, the Lurline and the Matsonia.
