The historic Mechanization and Modernization agreement of 1960 is reached on the West Coast. The M&M agreement between the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) and the Pacific Maritime Association reflected a cooperative approach by management and labor in adopting new automated methods of handling cargo on the waterfront.
