The Manukai and the Manulani, two super freighters enter Matson's service in 1921. They are the largest ships ever constructed in an American shipyard, weighing 9,550 gross tons, with a 14,000-ton carrying capacity. Each of the 498-foot, 13-knot vessels had space for refrigerated cargo and deep tanks for oil and molasses. Each ship could lift 280,223 sacks (100 pounds each) of raw sugar.
