Noting the advantages of steamer operation, namely greater speed and precise schedules, Captain Matson purchased a 391-foot steamer and converted it from a coal burner to oil. The ship was reconstructed into a combination passenger and freight vessel and was named the Enterprise, the first oil-burning steamer in the Pacific.
